Project Bahía de Panama
Oct 5th, 2008 by admin
The sanitation project to clean Bahía de Panama is 21% complete. This is probably the most needed project in Panama. Most of the city’s sewage is dumped into the water in the area which makes a stench that is repugnant and dangerous for the public’s health.
The project, which started in September 2006, incorporates the construction of a plant for wastewater treatment in Juan Diaz; this will inhibit untreated sewage from discharging into the ocean. The sewage will be directed to the treatment plant through series of pumping stations all throughout the city.
The project is said to cost more than $200m. It includes the construction of a tunnel that stretches from Costa del Este, under Parque Omar and Multiplaza mall, until it ends in Avenida Balboa.
The system becomes operational in 2011; users will have to pay for the service which will cost no more than 50% of the user’s water bill. The cleaning up project will also be available to areas which do not have access to sewerage system which includes parts of Tocumen, Chilibre and San Miguelito.
