Pottery Artifacts

Artifacts believed to be worth more than $50,000 and almost 1,000 years old have been recovered from the widow of an Oregon man, who passed away in 2004. The man believed to be a teacher in Panama took the artifacts, together with his Panamanian wife back to the US in the 1980s. Some of the items were sold at markets and via the internet.

The FBI, who was alerted by an acquaintance of the widow, investigated the tip off and the artifacts were revealed. According to the Panamanian constitution as well as the laws, it is illegal to remove any artifacts from the country.

The artifacts predate the Colombian period, which makes experts believe that the dating of these items make them almost 1,000 years old, with a fair value. Although no charges are being laid against the widow, the items will be returned to the Panama government.
