Panama Tourism – The Figures

A 19,3% increase in revenue generated from the tourism industry, via what tourists actually spent, was realized in the period January to August of 2008, compared to the same period of 2007.

The amount which was spent by tourists was revealed at just below $918 million, and an analysis of spending has further revealed that the months of July and August generate the most foreign exchange in Panama.

Further studies and analysis by the Department of Research and Statistics at the Tourism Authority of Panama (ATP), estimate that the revenue will surpass the $2 billion mark by the end of 2008, which will be an increase of 24% over the 2007 period.

The tourism authority acknowledge the global economy issues, but remain confident for 2009, where Carl-Frederik Nordstrom, the deputy general of ATP, was quoted as saying that Panama will still outgrow the Central American region in tourism.
