Los Santos

Los Santos Province

Located entirely on the south eastern side of the Azuero Peninsula, it is Panama’s 3rd largest, with the provincial capital being Las Tablas. The province is world famous for its carnivals which include the Festival Nacional de la Pollera, Festival of the Patron Santa Librada, and the Festival Nacional de la Mejorana in Guarare. The province is home to over 80000 inhabitants, and is believed to be home to the birth of the traditional Panamanian dress, called the Pollera, together with the Herrera Province.

Due to the vast exposure to the Pacific Coast this province has some of the best surfing, diving and fishing centres, the most popular surfing spots include Playa Lagarto, Playa El Toro, Playa Destiladeros, Ciruleo and Playa Venao all accessible out of the town of Pedasi. There are numerous other beaches accessible from Cambutal, Venado and along the coast.

Notable towns in the Los Santos Province include Guarare, named after the Indian chief during the Spanish era of Panama. This town is host to the Festival Nacional de la Mejorana, held in September, and has a deep sense of the Panamanian culture as reflected in the music, and the pollera.

Pedasi is an ideal fishing village offering magnificent views and opportunities for the avid sports fisherman, nestled in the surrounding green hills with direct access to the beautiful blue waters of the Pacific Ocean. Only 25 minutes by boat from Pedasi is the island paradise of Isla Iguana, with its tropical white sand, which is a wildlife refuge and contains the biggest coral reef off the island, ideal for scuba and snorkel divers.

Last but not least the provincial capital of Las Tablas, serviced by the Mensabe Port is home to the national monument of Santa Liberada Church. Las tabals is home to the annual carnival in Azuero, which is comparable to the carnivals of Rio.

Los Santos has history, beauty, coastal areas and beautiful nature – it proves to be a destination of choice amongst both residents and tourists alike, within easy access from the capital of Panama City.
