Parque Omar – An example of green responsibility

The recycling efforts of the locals from Parque Omar have surpassed all expectations. The initial idea which was to educate users of the city’s Parque Omar, one of the few green areas within the city and bordering the areas of Carrasquila, San Fransisco and La Loma. The education process was to educate people to recycle their used bottles, paper and plastic in terms of proper waste management, and was initially funded by grants from The National Parks of Panama Group and the Social Action Foundation (FAS). All income that is generated via the collection efforts and recycling is put back into the project to fund it generically. Live in Panama

The education process and the resulting interest expressed by people utilizing the park has resulted in the officials having to clear the collection points from twice a week to every single day. Officials hope to open the recycling operations center to the public, so that they may bring larger amounts of recyclables in, as well as to serve as a education center to school children, where they can learn more about the recycling process and the importance thereof.

With current funds generated being used to fund this initiative, officials hope that more income generation will enable more investment into Parque Omar itself, including benches, lights and amenities within the park. The initiative already serves as a motivation for other similar areas and businesses to follow suit in this vital area of green responsibility.
