The highest peak in Panama is the dormant volcano recorded at 3475m above sea level, the peak is named Baru, the name of this peak is also used for the surrounding area of the Baru national park. According to widespread claims both the Caribbean and Pacific Oceans are visible on a clear day, from this high lying area. In terms of scenery the area has been compared to the European Alps. The same goes for the area in terms of the climatic conditions, because this area does not have the humidity and heat that lower lying regions do. The naturally beautiful scenery, wild orchids, the chance of spotting Toucans and Quetzals as well as the other indigenous fauna and flora all form parts of the center of attraction in this area. There other park nearby; The Amistad National Park, is termed ‘bi-national biosphere’ because it is shared with Costa Rica.

An exquisite paradise, Isla Colon is surrounded by pristine waters along the Caribbean Sea to match its golden sand beaches, making it a popular destination for the active water sports loving tourists. Popular activities include scuba diving and snorkeling, where one can witness the varying beautiful marine life, from a seemingly endless species of fish to the enticingly colorful coral reefs. Incidentally, Isla Colon was actually formed from these coral reefs; and a lot of the reefs can be seen in the island’s center.

Various wildlife species also abound in Isla Colon. The rare night monkey is one of those that can be found here due to the island’s secluded nature. A variety of species of birds can be viewed within the vicinity of Isla Colon. This includes the famous Bird Island, which has numerous migratory birds that seek refuge on this island. At any given time, there is said to be over fifty different bird species on the island.

Nearby Popa Island offers nature lovers the chance to appreciate how nature has been preserved for centuries. Popa offers the visitor a unique opportunity to bear witness of the delicate balance between man and nature, in all its wonders.

Under the French rule during the 1880s, the first attempt to construct the canal took place. The project was a failure, and almost 22,000 workers died because of working conditions and local disease. Although it was in the early 16th century where the concept of this canal was formed, it was only successfully implemented in the early 1900s. The United States completed and formally opened the canal by the year 1914. More than 5,000 additional workers died before the successful completion of this 48 mile (77 km) canal.

Panama Canal has been a huge success since it’s inaguration, and remains to be a vital passage for international maritime vessels. Vessels as small as private yachts to those as huge as cruise ships can pass through the canal with ease. However, there are vessels that are much wider than what the canal can allow to pass through. These modern vessels are known as post Panamax / super Panamax (exceeding the maximum allowed Panamax size), and are restricted from using the canal. This issue is being addressed by the Canal Expansion project. Those allowed passage, will find that it takes only nine hours to pass from one end of the canal to the other end.

As of 2005, an average of 40 vessels pass through the canal daily (or a total of 14,011 vessels that have carried a combined 278.8 million tons of cargo). The journey from the Pacific side of the ocean to the Atlantic side (or vice-versa) is one from southeast to northwest.

Founded by the Spanish explorers in 1738, David city was formerly a gold prospecting camp. Today, David retains much of its Spanish heritage and traditions, as evident in its infrastructure, housing architecture as well as the highly influenced way of life.

David is easily accessible via the Pan American Highway. Once in David, one will notice that there are two major ports located nearby, namely the ports of Puerto Armuelles and Pedregal. The locals’ attitude and treatment towards visitors is generally very inviting and friendly, which adds to David’s charm and atmosphere.

Some major events in David include the Feria Internacional de David, which takes place every March, here international companies exhibit their products and services. The Children’s Day Festival is scheduled for July of every year.

Surfing is a popular sport in David, as the waves near the beaches are quite big and consistently offer a good break. On the other hand, the nightlife is phenomenal, as the culture of food and entertainment seems to be part of the city’s make up.

With a landscape often compared to that of Switzerland, a magnificent view of the Pacific Ocean, and an enticing local, David has certainly all the right aspects to charm any visitor, local or foreign.

This eastern district of the city also boasts of having excellent private educational institutions, shopping malls, pharmacies and hardware stores.

A lot of the buildings and establishments in Punta Pacifica offer superb panoramic views of the Amador causeway, Panama Bay, and the city itself. Infrastructure is highly technical and well developed, and most of today’s modern amenities are easily available.

Punta Pacifica has various walking trails for visitors wanting to commune with nature. Lush green areas, parks and a variety of bird species are located along these trails.
